With the trade of Jamie Langenbrunner for a conditional draft pick from the Dallas Stars, the Devils are left with a hole on their roster. A hole that some would argue has been empty for some time. The Devils no longer have a captain.
There are many schools of thought as to who should wear the “C” on their chest next for the team. There is the Kovalchuk camp, the Parise camp, and the Elias camp, just to name a few.
The Kovalchuk camp contends that he should be given the captaincy since he will be around for the foreseeable future. With a 15-year deal on the books, unless another monumental trade is made, Kovalchuk is looking to be a Devil for the remainder of his career, or at the very least, for a very large piece of it. Some fans would like to see him wear the “C”, to give him a sense of home.
Kovalchuk has had a rough start to his career in New Jersey. After leaving Atlanta in February of last year he has a total of 48 points in 66 games played. In three of his last four full seasons with the Thrashers he was better than a point per game player. Fans who feel Kovalchuk should be captain of the Devils think that the “C” will give him the mental boost he needs to get points on the board, like he proved he can in the past. The entire Devils organization has been in a slump since the arrival of Kovalchuk. To say that giving him captaincy will turn around the entire team seems ludicrous.
Members of the Parise camp content that he is now one of the faces of the franchise. With Parise set to become a Restricted Free Agent following the 2010-2011 season, there is a feeling that being given the honor of captain may entice him to re-sign with the struggling Devils. Parise has been quoted as saying that he wishes to remain a Devil. These comments were said before the departure of Langenbrunner, one of the few veteran leaders the Devils have on the roster.
Whether Parise still intends to be wearing the red and black next fall is currently unknown, but there is no reason to think that his feelings have changed. Since one of the bigger reasons to give the “C” to Parise would be to entice him to stay, something he already plans to do, why should he just be handed the “C”?
The last of the names being thrown around a lot for the new captain is that of Patrik Elias. A veteran member of the New Jersey Devils, now in his fifteenth season, Elias has the leadership qualities required to be the Devils captain, and he has shown that before as the Captain during the 2006-2007 season. Currently an Alternate Captain for the team, Elias has the skills to be the Captain. In the 2006-2007 season Elias saw one of his better years in terms of point production, earning .92 points per game that season.
Elias has been a leader in the locker room. In 2007-2008 his captaincy was given Jamie Langenbrunner. Now that Langenbrunner has departed it is time to return the “C” to its proper place, upon the chest of #26, Patrik Elias.
