David Clarkson Signs With EC Red Bull Salzburg of Austrian League

Posted by on October 24, 2012

David Clarkson has signed with EC Red Bull Salzburg of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga in Austria.

Here is the full release from the EC Red Bull site:

“Following in the footsteps of NHL defender Tobias Enström, who joined EC Red Bull Salzburg on Monday, forward David Clarkson, another player from the world’s premier ice hockey league, joins the Red Bulls in Salzburg. The 28-year-old Canadian, who also has a British passport, is contracted to the New Jersey Devils and owing to the NHL lockout has been able to sign with the Red Bulls through to the end of the current season (with NHL exit clause).

Born in Toronto, the 1.85 m left winger cut his ice hockey teeth the usual way in Canada’s strong junior leagues. In the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) David Clarkson spent three years with the Kitchener Rangers, racking up 74 goals in 185 games. In the 2003-2004 season he helped the Kitchener Rangers to win the Memorial Cup, the coveted junior ice hockey club championship trophy awarded annually to the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) champion. After stints with AHL clubs the Albany River Rats and Lowell Devils, he joined the New Jersey Devils two years later, playing for the team since 2007. David Clarkson has notched up 82 goals and 64 assists in 378 NHL games.

Last season David Clarkson almost got his hands on the Stanley Cup, the most coveted ice hockey trophy in the world, but his team was ultimately defeated by the Los Angeles Kings in the finals series, losing 2-4 in the head-to-head. The New Jersey Devils last lifted the Stanley Cup in the 2002-2003 season, which was before David Clarkson’s time.

After his arrival in Salzburg late this morning, along with his wife and daughter, the Canadian wasted no time in visiting his new place of work and said a brief hello to the team. He is due to attend his first ice training session this evening. “I’m still a little tired after the long flight, but I’m looking forward to this new chapter in my career and to playing in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga,” said David Clarkson, who will be competing for the first time in a championship outside of North America.”
