With Vladimir Zharkov being demoted to Albany yesterday, with Lou Lamoriello saying “Kovalchuk is healthy and Tedenby is going back in the lineup”, where Mattias Tedenby should be playing will likely be a question some are asking once again.
Tedenby had played in every game this season until he was a healthy scratch in the team’s last game against Buffalo.
In the 16 games before sitting, Tedenby had just three assists and no goals. He was a minus-3 and had only 18 shots on goal.
While he did average 11:36 of ice time, there were people who thought he should be out on the ice a bit more. He’s had almost no power play time.
Coach DeBoer has said that Tedenby needs to work on his defense. DeBoer also said that he needs to feel confident in putting Tedenby out in a close game, in crucial situations.
I’ve heard from some that the same can be said about Kovalchuk… but we can’t even begin to compare the 21-year-old Tedenby to Kovy.
But anyone that has seen Tedenby play on a regular basis knows what he can do.
So, where do you stand on Tedenby? Does he deserve top-6 time? Would you rather see Zharkov up and have Tedenby sit?
What happens when Zajac and Josefson come back? Will Tedenby be useful as a fourth line player?
No matter where you stand, you have to think that Tedenby either needs to play or needs to be showcased and dealt.
The talent is there, as he has shown. The defense isn’t there yet, and that is something that needs to be worked on when you play for the Devils.

For what it’s worth, here’s the lineup I’d like to see, if only for a few games (or even a few shifts), just to see if it works:
Parise – Henrique – Kovalchuk
Tedenby – Elias – Sykora
Zubrus – Carter – Clarkson
Palmieri – Mills – Boulton
