Road Warriors: A Look At The Devils Road Records
November 10th, 2009 | by Carlos Figueiredo |by Carlos Figueiredo
With the Devils starting this season with an 8-0 record on the road I asked myself: “Self, just how good are the Devils on the road, historically?” I didn’t have an answer, so I took to the interwebs and was able to compile an answer for myself. And now, I share it with all of you.
NOTE: I only went back to the ‘96-’97 season for a few reasons:
1) The Devils have made the playoffs every year since then,
2) The last time the Devils missed the playoffs (’95-’96) was the last time they had a losing record on the road,
3) I’m lazy and didn’t want to go back any further.
Okay, so maybe I did go back all the way to ‘82-’83, but the road records in those early years weren’t pretty, so why include them? Exactly. Here we go…
‘96-’97-Overall Record: 45-23-14 Home: 23-9-9 Road: 22-14-5

‘05-’06-Overall Record: 46-27-9 Home: 27-11-3 Road: 19-16-6

Some other notes:
- In the 19 seasons that the Devils have made the playoffs, they had a losing record on the road in 6 of those seasons.
- In their three Stanley Cup winning years, the Devils road records were: 8-14-2 (’94-’95), 17-15-5-4 (’99-’00), 21-9-7-4 (’02-’03).
- Prior to the ‘96-’97 season, the Devils had only one winning record on the road in 14 seasons (18-14-10 in ‘93-’94)
So what does this all mean? Well…absolutely nothing!
It’s a good sign that the Devils are getting a good start on the road but they, like most other teams, are historically better at home. The road losses are going to come. The home wins will also be there.
Having watched this team since the beginning, and having had season tickets for years, it always seemed like the team was better on the road. Except for a few years, I was wrong. However, I did all this research so I posted this anyway. Hope you enjoyed all these numbers! I did.
LET’S GO DEVILS! Or stay home, doesn’t matter either way!

I don’t know why the Devils are playing so well on the road, it’s usually the other way around.
But, you can’t deny the numbers and there is definitely something clicking with these road numbers.
I’m actually going to attribute this long winning streak to some great play from Martin Brodeur and the defense in general.
The Devils are one of only two teams that haven’t allowed 40 goals yet this season. Them and Buffalo have only allowed 37. It’s a good thing because they’re not scoring as much as other teams, but they don’t have to. They’re getting the job done on their side of the ice and winning games.
To me, that’s the key to their winning streak.
